Thinking about higher education abroad? Consider Japan as well!

Each year more than 1.5 million students around the globe leave their country and go for higher education abroad. Of this 30% students go to USA (about 1/3rd), 15% to UK (as of 2013), 15% to Australia & New Zealand, 20% to Europe (all the countries in Europe included), 15% to Canada and Ireland, 5% Asia (mostly to Singapore, Hong Kong and China). Very few people go for Japan.

The number of foreign students coming to Japan to study currently is approximately 137,756 (as of 2012 and of this 75% students are coming through student exchange program). Thus, only around 34439 students study there as full time student and most of them are Chinese (about 65%).Even though the number of students increased in the year 2012 from 2011, there is a 2% decrease in students in the year 2013.

I found out the reason being the following after few Q&A sessions with students:-
·       Japan is an Earthquake/Tsunami prone zone and it’s highly risky to go and study there.
·       Language Barrier and you can’t learn Japan that easily unlike other languages like German, French or Spanish
·       Japanese economy is on a downturn now and its costly to study there.
·       We don’t get work visa unlike in USA, Australia, Canada
·       Very few students from our country so we may feel isolated.

But in spite of all the above mentioned problems in my opinion students should consider Japan because of following reason.

·       Student to faculty ratio is very high
·       Japanese Universities receive large funding for carrying out research and thus top the world rankings. Some top universities include university of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka etc.

·       Very few international students studying there from Europe, north America and other parts of the world and the companies there are looking out for international students to diversify their working environment
·        The greatest appeal of studying in Japan is its academic environment where one can study state-of-the-art technology and acquire the knowledge that enabled Japan's phenomenal postwar economic growth.
·       Scholarship is available for international students (with a GPA of 3.2/4 I have seen students getting full scholarship. My senior Nancy Yona got a full scholarship along with stipend for pursuing her masters and integrated PhD program in information technology in Nagoya Institute of Technology. And she was the only Indian studying there.

·       The greatest bike manufacturer’s hails from Japan (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki) and currently Japan tops in the field of Robotics and Automation and is considered the best for animation and 3-d imaging (yup, USA is second).
·       Few international programs have been initiated by Japanese universities and these programs are taught entirely in English. Else you can go for a yearlong Japanese preparatory course and study courses in Japanese language.

Japan is an island nation made up of four different main islands. The northernmost island of Japan, Hokkaido, sits on the Ring of Fire and has some of the most famous naturally occurring hot springs to soak in. Whether it is electronics, Japanese literature, medicine or international business administration, Japanese universities and other institutes of higher education can offer course studies or research programs of virtually any field. Many institutions of higher education, such as universities and junior colleges, are well equipped with fine research, computer, and library facilities and enable students to carry out their research in an excellent environment.

Sometimes students are asked to take entrance examinations so that they can check the eligibility of international students. And few programs also ask for Japanese language proficiency.

There are basically five types of educational institutions in Japan:-
·
Universities (undergraduate) - A undergraduate course is of 4 years duration with exception to medicine, dentistry and veterinary science department.

There are few universities which offer course in animation, cartoon art, and video game design. And these are quite famous since Japan is famous for its Manga (Japanese comics) and Anime (Japanese cartoon) worldwide and I am myself a big fan of many Japanese cartoons including Naruto, death note, fairy tail , once piece etc. Coming to the point, you can check the universities offering the above mentioned course here
